Reel formats and hooks that start conversations

Reels are how strangers find you, but most reels are built to be watched, not answered. This guide covers the hooks and formats that reliably generate comments and DMs, which is what actually matters when an AI closer is waiting in your inbox. Everything here is a repeatable structure you can batch, not a one-off creative stunt.

01The 2-second rule

Viewers decide to stay or scroll in under two seconds, and about half of them are watching with sound off. That gives you two hard requirements for every reel:

  • The first frame must work as a silent image: movement, a bold text overlay, a face reacting, or something visually mid-action. Never open on a logo, a slow fade, or you saying "hey guys."
  • The first line of text must create an open loop the viewer needs closed. If the hook tells the whole story, there is no reason to keep watching.
